Sibling Rivalry
If there are brothers and sisters then there is sibling rivalry. Generally the further apart in years the siblings are the less likelihood of sibling rivalry. How to handle the sibling rivalry depends upon your particular parenting philosophy. The best thing is to be consistent each time the rivalry becomes an issue. Here are some tips on dealing with it:
For younger children who may not understand reasoning, you may need to implement a type of punishment if the rivalry gets out of hand. Try a time-out or isolation (in their room, sitting in the “naughty chair” or something similar). General rule of thumb for time outs is one minute per year of age. IE – a 3 year old would have a 3 minute time out. For older children, aside from explaining to them about how each person is an individual and has different needs and that you love each equally, encourage them to work through the rivalry themselves. In the real world there is going to be competition and no one is going to hold their hands through it. Perhaps sibling rivalry is preparation for the real world, Teach them to handle it early on will help them to become better adults in this fiercely competitive world of ours. © by Lori Ramsey of Stages in Pregnancy
