The Greatest Gift of All – The Badge of
Motherhood
The word mother comes from the word “mammary glands”. Mammary glands are our breasts, and it’s because many years ago breasts were the main way to feed a baby the first year of life; so, since time immemorial, the nickname, “mother” had its origin.
To her children, a mother is the know-all end-all to everything in life. Mothers have eyes in the backs of their heads and power in their kisses to heal all boo-boos. Mothers don’t bat an eye at all the dirty diapers and messes that are magically cleaned and made right. Motherhood badges come in many shapes and sizes. From spit-up stains on our shoulders to the bittersweet experience of watching a baby grow into a child-- then into an adult who walks out the door of the family homestead to make their way in the world. It’s during that precious time from spit-up stained shoulders to tear stained eyes as they strike out into adulthood that we women, as mothers, have the opportunity to shape our childrens’ lives—their futures—and, ultimately, the future of the world. I believe our reward once we’ve accomplished all this is the title of “grand”. When our children start the process of creating their own family—and bring us their own—our “grand”children—that we then reap the rewards over and over, to be able to stand back and watch as another generation experiences the joys and rigors of parenthood…and, ultimately, become “grands” too! I think the greatest gift of all – the highest honor, for me anyway, is the title of “Mom”!
