Examples of Affection Between the Parents
Let’s discuss an important subject – that of children seeing their parents show affection to one another. I’m not talking about sexual affection (which is best left to the privacy of the bedroom) but of touchy – feely affection of hugs and kisses and hand-holding – and back-rubbing, etc - innocent to watch, certainly not X-rated. First – It’s comforting for a child to know and witness that their parents love each other. Displaying affection in front of the kids shows them that you care about each other and that’s it’s alright for moms and dads to be affectionate. Second – It helps to set the stage for when they reach adult-hood. I’m sure their future spouse will be appreciative if they’re married to someone whose parents set a good example of open displays of love and affection—which, in turn, engender the same behavior in the children when they’re grown and with their love mate. Conversely, if children seldom see mom and dad kiss and hug, they may think there’s something wrong, or grow up thinking this is normal and thus become a “cold” unaffectionate adult too!. It’s very healthy for children to witness the truth about how we feel about our spouses. Showing the affection to one another lets the children know that their world is secure, that mom and dad love each other and all is well. Teach your children that a loving home is what’s normal and help them to become well-rounded adults. It boosts their emotional health. So go ahead and hug and kiss in front of the kids! It’s good for them as well as the two of you.
