ADD Diagnosis If you have a child that has been given an ADD diagnosis (Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD – Attention Deficit Hypertensive Disorder) it can be very frustrating at times. Dealing with ADD and ADHD kids can be easier if you consult with the experts. Teachers who have dealt with these kids, guidance counselors, psychologist, parents with children with ADD / ADHD are all excellent resources and mentors. Realize that your child will need more help in dealing with day to day life. This is why it’s so important to find a good mentor to help you. First and foremost parents need to have patience. Patience with a good sense of humor will go a long way in dealing with your child. To keep your child focused, they need a good routine. You must establish control with them and be consistent with your rules. When you structure the rules of behavior, go over them with your child. Let them know what is expected of them. Explain the discipline that will happen should your child break a rule. Always listen to your child and hear their side even if they did wrong and broke a rule. Give them constructive feedback when rules are broken. Help them to improve their behavior by offering suggestions to follow the rules better. Give them more time to complete things. Better yet, for example if they are to keep their room clean – help them out by making a chart with each little chore broke down. Pick up dirty clothes, make bed, put toys away, etc. It helps them to have a sense of accomplishment when they reach these mini goals. Since ADD / ADHD children tend to have excessive energy to burn, try to channel it with plenty of physical activities. Try to time their activities with their energy levels. When speaking to your child, always make eye contact and if you are giving them instructions, make them repeat it back to you. Keep their rooms and their activities organized and scheduled. It gives them a sense of responsibility and helps you to stay on track. An ADD diagnosis does not have to be hard to deal with. If you follow the simple guidelines above and if you take the advice of your healthcare provider you and your child can survive and thrive in spite of the disorder. Practice love and patience, provide structure and organization and you will be giving them the best chance possible at having a normal life.
